The Genetic Factor

Genetic research begun in the late 1950s and 60s has contradicted long – held beliefs that a child’s personality is completely shaped by its environment;

indications are that heredity accounts for up to fifty percent of a child temperament.

David W. Fulker, a researcher at the Institute of Behavior Genetics, University of Colorado, says that parents who are genetically disposed to such traits as altruism or aggression not only pas on the genes favorable to those traits but are also more likely to provide environments that enhance them.

Fulker says that aggressive personalities were found in three successive generations during research conducted at the University of London Institute of Psychiatry, in which he took part.

This research, which is taking place all over the world and which includes other aggressive personalities traits, does not exclude environment as a contributing factor, however.
