THE HANDSHAKE

“I love a hand that meets my own with a grasp that cause some sensation”, wrote Frances Sargent Osgood ( Locke), a 19th century Amrican poet.

Clasping Hands, or grasping a person’s hand , is a sign of friendliness. In earlier times it meant the absence of hostility, as it indicated a lack of weapons. Clasping hands can signify allegiance or union with each other. Symbolically, shaking hands forms a cross, or ankh, the ancient Egyptian symbol of life.

The handshake, however, is associated more with Western cultures than with other parts of the globe. To the Western world shaking hands with a person is more than a gesture of greeting. It can leave a lasting impression. First impressions are vitally important, a that first contact often begins with a handshake. An individual’s hands placed together, rather than offered in hand shake, implies deferment to a greater power and allegiance. Eastern and Buddhist cultures use this gesture a s a means of showing courtesy to other people when greeting them.

Traditionally, the Chinese do not show their hands in a greeting of respect. In China, the right hand stands for yang and strength, and the left hand, yin, is the hand of honor.Your first introduction to a person’s palm usually comes from a handshake, and it can tell you many things. Have you ever shaken hands with a “wet fish” or a “dishrag” and judged them accordingly? If so, you’ve already dabbled in a little palmistry. If you snake hands with a person whose palm feels moist, don’t sell them short. If the hand is warm as well as moist, you have met someone who cares about other people, often to the point where they worry unnecessarily about pleasing others.
